Our Little Slice of Paradise: Why We Keep Coming Back to St. George Island

If you've followed us for a while, you know we love finding places that help us slow down and soak up quality family time. After visiting St. George Island for the past few years, I think we've officially decided it's going to be our yearly vacation spot.

If you're looking for a quiet beach town without the crowds, this might just become your favorite place too.

The Drive

From our home, it takes about 6 hours to get there, which makes it an easy road trip with kids.

One thing to know before you go: during the last couple of hours of the drive, there aren't many places to stop for food or bathroom breaks. It's not a huge deal, but definitely plan ahead with snacks, drinks, and a full tank of gas.

Where We Stay

One of my favorite things about St. George Island is the variety of beach house rentals. There are so many affordable options, and many are just steps from the beach.

We've stayed in The Plantation for most of our trips, but this year we stayed in a house right in downtown near the lighthouse. As much as we enjoyed The Plantation, staying downtown was definitely my favorite.

Being able to walk almost everywhere made the trip feel even more relaxing. Every morning I could grab my iced coffee, the kids loved visiting the playground, and we could end our evenings with a walk for ice cream without ever getting back in the car.

One of the coolest experiences we've had on St. George Island happened completely by chance. During our last trip, we got to watch the Sea Turtle Rescue Team release a rehabilitated sea turtle back into the Gulf. We all gathered on the beach, learned about the turtle's recovery, and watched as it made its way back into the water. I'll admit, we were all expecting to see a giant sea turtle! Instead, out came this tiny little turtle that was only about two years old.

The Best Time to Visit

We've visited in April, May, and July, and every season has been beautiful in its own way.

For our family, May was the sweet spot. The weather was warm enough for beach days without the intense summer heat, and it still felt peaceful.

Staying in The Plantation

The Plantation is a gated community on the island and has some great perks, including:

• Two community pools

• Private beach access

• Quiet, peaceful atmosphere

• Beautiful homes

• Beautiful shells can be found early in the AM

  
  

The only downside is that depending on where your rental is located, it can take around 20 minutes to drive into town. If you plan to grab coffee, eat out, or shop frequently, you'll spend more time in the car.

Pros of St. George Island

Cons of St. George Island

Like anywhere, there are a few things to keep in mind.

• There is only one grocery store, a small Piggly Wiggly, so it's smart to bring some groceries with you or stop before arriving.

• Restaurant options are limited compared to larger beach towns.

• If you're looking for nightlife, shopping centers, or lots of entertainment, this probably isn't the destination for you.

• The farther west you stay on the island, the longer the drive into town.

Is St. George Island Worth It?

For our family, absolutely. We aren't looking for a vacation packed with attractions or busy schedules. We want slow mornings with iced coffee, long beach days, shell hunting, sunset walks, and quality time together.

St. George Island gives us exactly that. It's peaceful, beautiful, uncrowded, and feels like stepping back to a simpler way of life. While it may not have dozens of restaurants or big attractions, that's honestly part of its charm.

If you're searching for a quiet Florida beach that feels like a hidden gem, St. George Island might just become your little slice of paradise too.
