Becoming a mom for the first time is one of the most beautiful and life-changing experiences, but it’s also full of surprises, challenges, and a steep learning curve. Looking back, there are a few things I wish someone had told me before I embarked on this incredible journey. If you’re a new mom or about to become one, here are 3 things I wish I knew as a first-time mom that might help you feel a little more prepared and a lot less alone.
1. It’s Okay to Ask for Help (and You Will Need It!)
I thought I could handle everything on my own. But the truth is, motherhood is a team sport. Whether it’s your partner, family, friends, or a community of other moms, accepting help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a necessity. From late-night feedings to simply getting a shower, having someone to lean on makes a huge difference. Don’t hesitate to reach out or say yes when help is offered. You deserve it!
2. Trust Your Instincts Over All the Advice
Everyone loves to share advice, some helpful, some overwhelming, and some contradictory! Books, blogs, family, and well-meaning strangers can make you question every decision you make. But at the end of the day, you know your baby best. Trust your gut, and don’t feel pressured to follow every tip. Your unique bond with your child is your best guide.
3. Self-Care Isn’t Selfish — It’s Essential
You can't give what you don't have. Prioritizing your physical, mental, and emotional well-being is essential to being the best mother possible. Even brief moments, such as enjoying a quiet cup of tea, taking a short walk, or spending a few minutes deep breathing, can recharge your spirit. Keep in mind that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for both your well-being and your family's. If momma isn't functioning well, the family won't function well either.
Motherhood is a beautiful mess of love, learning, and growth. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, know that you’re not alone, and every mom has been there. What’s one thing you wish you knew before becoming a mom? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
