First Week of School Survival Kit: Everything That's Saving My Sanity

School Survival Kit

The first week of school is exciting, but let's be honest, it can also feel overwhelming. New schedules, early mornings, packing lunches, homework, and trying to remember where everyone's shoes disappeared to can make the transition a little chaotic.

Over the years, I've learned that a little preparation goes a long way. Here are the things that help our family have smoother mornings and calmer evenings during the first week of school.

1. Create a Backpack Drop Zone

Choose one spot near the door where backpacks, shoes, and jackets always go. This simple habit saves so much time in the morning because everyone knows exactly where to find what they need.

2. Stock a Lunch-Making Station

Keep lunch supplies together so you're not searching through multiple cabinets.

My essentials include:

  • Bento boxes

  • Reusable snack bags

  • Thermos

  • Ice packs

  • Lunch notes

  • Reusable utensils

Having everything in one place makes packing lunches much faster.

3. Prep What You Can the Night Before

One of the biggest stress relievers is preparing as much as possible before bedtime.

Each evening we:

  • Pack backpacks

  • Fill water bottles

  • Lay out clothes

  • Charge electronics if needed

  • Double-check calendars

Morning Erin is always thankful for evening Erin.

4. Create a Snack Station

Kids seem to come home starving after school! Having a designated snack bin makes after-school time much easier.

Some of our favorites include:

  • Applesauce pouches

  • Cheese sticks

  • Pretzels

  • Granola bars

  • Yogurt pouches

  • Freeze-dried fruit

  • Crackers

5. Keep Breakfast Simple

The first week isn't the time to make elaborate breakfasts.

Easy options include:

  • Yogurt and fruit

  • Muffins

  • Oatmeal

  • Bagels

  • Frozen waffles

  • Breakfast sandwiches

Simple is sustainable.

6. Use a Family Calendar

Whether it's a paper calendar or one on your phone, having everyone's schedule in one place helps avoid surprises.

Write down:

  • School events

  • Sports

  • Appointments

  • Spirit days

  • Early dismissal dates

7. Give Yourself Grace

Not every morning will go perfectly, and that's okay. The goal isn't perfection; it's creating routines that make life a little easier.

A little preparation, lots of grace, and an extra cup of coffee can make all the difference.

I hope these ideas help your family start the school year feeling organized, prepared, and ready to make wonderful memories together.
