Flying with a Toddler; Big Sister Advice You Actually Need ✈️🤍

Flying with toddlers

Flying with a toddler can feel overwhelming… but it doesn’t have to be. We recently flew with Bradley & Olivia, so I’m sharing exactly what helped, what I packed, and what I’d do differently, big sis style.

1. Before You Fly

✔ Book Smart

  • Nap time flights? Great.Early morning flights? Also great (yes, even the 4 a.m. leave-the-house kind, we did it and it worked).

  • Window seat = built-in entertainment

  • Early boarding for less stress! This is a must if you can

  • Give yourself more time than you think you need

You don’t get bonus points for rushing.

2. What I Packed in Our Toddler Carry-On

Bradley had his own seat, his own personal item, and a carry-on, which is what I used to pack the kids' items.

🎒 Must-Haves

  • Change of clothes (for toddler + YOU)- I keep in my carry-on

  • Snacks (more than you think you need)- I use a snack container for multiple options

  • Spill-proof cups

  • Pull-ups/diapers + wipes

  • Jackets

  • Comfort item (lovey or favorite stuffed animal)

✨ Entertainment

  • New small toy (surprise factor works wonders)

  • Stickers

  • No Mess Color Books

  • Tablet (pre-download shows on WiFi) and headphones

Don’t overcomplicate it. Simple rotation works.

3. Airport Tips

  • Let them walk and burn energy before boarding!

  • Use the bathrooms before boarding

  • Bring a lightweight stroller, gate check stroller

  • Get a foldable dolly for a car seat

A portable dolly for the carseat is a game-changer. We strap Bradley in and roll him through the airport because it keeps him contained and safe while keeping it easy. Work smarter, not harder.

4. On the Plane

  • Offer snack or drink during takeoff + landing (helps ears pop)

  • Rotate activities every 20–30 minutes

  • Use a baby carrier for your infant in your lap (Olivia and I slept)

If your toddler cries? If they wiggle? If they’re loud? You are allowed to exist in public with your children. You will likely never see these people again.

5. Lap Infant vs Buying a Seat

Infants under 2 can fly free on your lap (always double-check your airline). We fly with Delta Air Lines and have done this several times. You can absolutely buy a seat and use a car seat if that feels better for you. There is no “right” way. There’s your way.

✨ If You Can… Bring Extra Hands

If you have the option to travel with grandparents, a sibling, or another trusted adult — do it.

Traveling with littles is a team sport.

Travel days can feel chaotic, but they’re also memory-making days. Grace over perfection. Deep breaths. You are doing better than you think.

Love,

Your internet big sister 🤍
