When Mom Goes Out of Town: How I Prep Our Family

Going out of town as a mom requires serious prep work. You’re not just packing a bag for yourself; you’re making sure everyone at home is set up for success while you’re gone. From meals to routines to little comforts, there’s a lot to think through.
To make things easier (and a little more fun), I decided to put together a “Dad + Kids Survival Basket” for Bobby and the kids.
I normally meal prep ahead of time, but I don't think I will do that this time. I will make a crockpot meal the day I leave, and then I will put an Uber Eats gift card in the basket so they can get delivery one night.
To give them something fun to do together, I’m including a few easy crafts. Hobby Lobby and Michaels are my go-to spots for inexpensive, ready-to-go craft kits. Most come with paint or markers included, which makes them perfect for low-stress creativity.
No basket is complete without a game or two. I’m adding dominoes this time. Simple games are perfect for all ages and encourage connection without screens. You could also add some new books; I am adding one.
Since Bobby usually handles bath time, I wanted to make that part of the evening extra smooth (and fun). I added colored bath foam, bath bombs, and a few playful bath toys to help make baths something the kids look forward to.
Of course, I couldn’t forget snacks. I’m stocking up with their favorites like pretzels, cookies, fruit snacks, and a few other treats they love. A little snack stash goes a long way.
One thing that really eases my mind is creating a simple document with all the kids’ important info. Our Bradley and Olivia Survival Sheet includes their routines, habits, schedules, what they like to eat, and what they can’t eat. It’s helpful for Bobby and comforting for me, knowing everything is written down.
Leaving town as a mom isn’t always easy, but a little preparation makes a big difference. Knowing my family feels supported, and maybe even a little spoiled, helps me enjoy my time away with peace of mind. Even though I will be missing them the whole time, haha.
