DIY Faux Limewash Accent Wall

I’ve been in full nesting mode lately, wanting to make our home more fun and cozy. While looking at our breakfast room, I thought it would be the perfect spot for an accent wall on our fireplace.

At first, I thought wallpaper would be ideal and even found some cute, affordable options on Amazon. But, oh boy, peel-and-stick wallpaper is not my friend. Two panels went on fine, but one kept bubbling, and as someone who notices every little flaw, it drove me crazy.

So, wallpaper was out, but paint was still on the table. After browsing Pinterest, I discovered limewash, a type of paint that creates a beautiful, natural, textured look. Since limewash can be pricey, I decided to mimic the look with traditional paint.

When choosing colors, it’s important to pick a light shade and a darker shade in the same color family. I grabbed a few options from Home Depot and tested them at home since lighting can make a huge difference.

I ended up picking two shades of pink and got a quart of matte paint for each (a sample size would have probably been enough!). I used a 3-inch brush and a 6-inch tray, dividing the tray with cardboard and painter’s tape, darker pink on one side, lighter on the other. Make sure to tape off any areas you don’t want painted!

To create the textured look, I painted in “x” strokes. This technique adds depth and visual interest, and with two coats, my wall went from plain to dramatic in about 30–45 minutes.

The finished wall added so much character to our breakfast room! I’m planning to try this technique in my half bath, maybe on the ceiling, and possibly down one wall. Follow me on my socials to see the final reveal!
