In today’s world, it’s nearly impossible to escape social media. From sharing family updates to building businesses, it’s woven into how we connect. But with every scroll, there’s that nagging question: Is social media good or bad? So, here’s an honest look at both sides.

The Good Side of Social Media
✨ Connection: It brings families, friends, and even strangers from across the globe together. For many moms (myself included), it’s a space to find community and not feel so alone in the messy middle of motherhood.
📚 Education & Inspiration: Whether it’s a faith-based quote, a healthy recipe, or a home hack,
social media offers endless ways to learn something new or be inspired.
💼 Opportunities: For creators, small business owners, and everyday users, it can be a launching pad. Many of us have turned our passions into platforms, sharing our values, stories, and brands we love.
The Bad Side of Social Media
😓 Comparison Culture: It’s easy to forget that most of what we see is a highlight reel. We compare our behind-the-scenes to someone else’s polished post, and it can drain joy and confidence.
⏳ Time Drain: “Just five minutes” can turn into an hour. It can steal time from our families, our peace, and even our faith practices.
🧠 Mental Overload: The constant noise, opinions, and pressure to “keep up” can leave us feeling anxious, distracted, or even spiritually depleted.
So, Is It Good or Bad?
The truth? It depends on how we use it. If we approach social media with purpose, boundaries, and balance, it can be a powerful tool for connection and creativity. But without intention, it can quietly take more than it gives.
Tips for Using Social Media Well
Follow accounts that uplift you.
Set time limits or social media “Sabbaths.”
Use your platform to encourage, not impress.
Check in with God before checking your feed.
Be grateful for what you have, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses.
Take breaks, set boundaries, and protect your peace.
Be present with your family, your friends, and your life offline.
Social media isn’t the enemy, but it’s not a substitute for real life either. Let’s be women who use it wisely, shine our light in the digital space, and always remember: what happens in real life is even more important than what happens online.
