How I Start Planning Room Decor
I like to start with a color scheme in mind or I find an item to go off of. This could be wall art, a pillow, a rug, or a piece of furniture. For the most recent project that I am working on, my office, I started with the rug.
This room is kind of awkwardly shaped so I knew I would have to get two rugs for either side of the room. I also wanted this room to be multipurpose, so it also serves as another guest room if needed and at some point use it as a playroom. So we have a guest/play/work room, haha.
I like to start planning with photoshop to create a mood board. If you don't have access to Photoshop, you can use PowerPoint or even print the images out and glue them to paper to see what looks good together.
The first step in the room makeover was painting the walls, trim, and built-in shelves. I like to go with neutral wall colors, so I just did Palais White for the wall color from Behr (at Home Depot) and Crystal Cut from Behr for the trim and shelves.
I needed two new lights and knew I wanted black, but I was not sure what shape I wanted. I found the chandeliers that I went with on Amazon. I looked at Amazon, Home Depot, and Wayfair before going with the ones I got. They are so fun and I love how they include the black and gold together since I have a gold lamp in the office part of the room.
For the bedding, I wanted to pull the blue out of the rug, so I found this quilt at Target and the bed skirt on Amazon. I wanted it to have more of a couch feel, but I am still on the hunt for more pillows.
The curtains are from target. I love mixing patterns like this. It can be an easy way to create a fun flow (as long as it does not clash). Stripes are a great pattern to use when wanting to mix patterns.
The mirror is from HomeGoods. I went with black so that it would match the chandeliers. I recently changed out the curtain rod to black and we will be changing all of our door hardware to black at some point. It is an easy way to give your house an updated look.
Another thing to remember is don't settle for furniture pieces or other room decor items. Get things that actually work for the space and that you can see staying. I am still on the hunt for a desk because I cannot find what I am wanting. I want something similar to what I have pictured, but it is not the right size.
