Update Your House with Little to No $$$

Writer's picture: Erin SzochErin Szoch

There are so many ways to spruce up your home with little to no spendings!

Lately, I have been working on updating our house without breaking the bank. Your own labor is so much cheaper than hiring someone. I have been painting each room in the house. I am painting all the walls Palais White and the trim Crystal Cut from Home Depot. What a difference fresh paint can do to a room!

The other thing I am doing to update the house is changing the hardware on the cabinets. I am looking to change the doorknobs as well. Currently, our doorknobs are gold, but we are thinking we are going to get black ones.

Instead of buying new decor, I have moved items around to give the space a new look. For example, I switched my gallery wall with my tall mirror. I like the placements better. I did buy new frames because I needed another row and I liked these better. These were from Amazon, only $22.99 for 6 of them.

I have also moved items from my bedroom to my master bath and items from my kitchen to my breakfast area. Sometimes it works better in the space that you move it to. You don't spend money and looks better! WIN-WIN.

Looking at thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace for home decor will keep decor prices on the lower end. It can also provide unique pieces in your home that others may not have. Lately, I have been in such an antique mood because I love older art and one-of-a-kind pieces. Some furniture pieces can be refurbished to match your current home aesthetic. I have pieces from my grandmother that I have redone and I love that they tell a story.

My favorite go-to shops for home decor that don't break the bank are Hobby Lobby, Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Walmart, Amazon, and Target. If you know me, you know I browse these places a lot.

Updating family pictures is another way to give a fresh change and you will have new pictures to look at everyday. I do this probably once a year so that we can really cherish the memories we had, some people don’t update there pictures for many years which is great too!

Getting faux plants for vases are great to keep forever.. I have faux plants from 5 years ago and plan on having them for many years to come. Now-a-days they looks so realistic it is crazy. If you like fresh flowers, try to cut flowers around your home.

I would say if you want timeless quality items to keep forever, save up and get them. Sometimes you can get quality items for cheaper, but it is okay to wait for pieces you want. There is nothing wrong with waiting on decorating to get items you really want that may have a heftier price tag. There are things I have in my home that are $ and some that are $$$.
